For a sustainable world

In 1993, we decided to become a leader in sustainability and drive the development of sustainability in the hotel sector. Today, sustainability is a part of our values – an integral element of all operations in our daily work.

The Nordic Swan

We measure our hotels with the toughest eco-label in the Nordic to ensure we're doing the right things.

Nordic eco-labeling

Sleep with a good conscience. Let the Nordic Swan be part of your decision-making when choosing a hotel for your next vacation or business trip.

Why the Nordic Swan?

To carry the Nordic Swan eco-labeling our hotels have to fulfill more than 44 mandatory criteria stated by the Nordic Swan. We're proud to say that 93% of our hotels are certified today. Among the criteria, you find work in reducing energy and water consumption, increasing the share of plant-based food and organic food and drinks, and buying eco-labeled furnishing for our hotels.

From requirement to reality

Some of the work you might see with your bare eye, and others happen behind the scene. Our sustainability work is ongoing and we always try to find new innovative ways to minimize our impact on the world. To mention a few things we do:

  • Charge your phone with 100% renewable energy.
  • Find trash cans to separate waste and recycle in the room.
  • Still and sparkling water in the restaurant is served from a Scandic glass bottle, to reduce our plastic consumption.
  • We invest in circular and timeless solutions for interior design.
  • We always serve as much plant-based, organic and locally produced food as we possibly can.
  • We only serve eggs from cage-free hens, no matter the time of the day.
  • We transform leftover food into new delicious dishes. Fruit can become yummy smoothies and left over bread crisp croutons on your salad.

Turn off the tap

Did you know that just turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can save up to 25 liters of water per guest and day?

Help us save 10,000 liters of water per year

A bright idea from a little boy who wanted to make a change for the climate – turn off the tap while you are brushing your teeth. A simple idea but easy to realise in your everyday life. To find out if this idea was effective enough to make an impact on energy and water savings, we selected three hotels in Norway to begin with, Scandic Karl Johan, Scandic Grensen and Scandic St Olavs Plass. We rolled out the idea where our guests could see the idea on stickers in their bathrooms saying "Turn off the tap for the sake of the planet" and on several places around the hotels.

The result? Success!

This simple and smart idea made an impact on the result and raised awareness among our guests who gave positive feedback, saying "It's effective" and "Reminds me to use water wisely everywhere!"

We have a possibility to save up to 25 liters of water per guest and day, that's almost 10,000 liters per year, equivalent to 62 bathtubs. This means that we have the possibility to save up to 4 million bath tubs each year when we roll out the initiative in our six countries. So let's be both resource and climate smart, together we can make a difference.

Cleaning on request

Our important sustainability initiative will give you as a guest the possibility to affect your climate imprint when you stay with us.

No more unnecessary cleaning, for the sake of the planet

By discontinuing to clean rooms that don’t really need cleaning we will save up to 10 million liters of water and 6,000 liters of cleaning agents. Per year! In addition, we will re-invest all the money saved in new climate-smart initiatives.

If you're staying with us for more than one night we will no longer automatically clean your room. If you would like us to clean, we will of course do that. This important sustainability initiative we've implemented on our Swedish and Danish hotels is all about the collaboration we can have with you as our guest to make a difference.

Removing plastic

As a part of our sustainability program, we're looking to remove all single-use disposable items made of plastic at all our hotels.

Removing plastic

As a part of our sustainability program, we have removed all single-use disposable items made of plastic.

  • Straws and cocktail stirrers made from plastic have been removed from all our hotels. In total, we’re taking approximately 1.3 million straws and 120 000 cocktail stirrers out of circulation on a yearly basis.
  • Plastic lids are replaced with eco-friendly lids for the take away coffee mug.
  • Toothbrushes in plastic are replaced with tooth brushes in bamboo.

We offer eco-friendly straws at our bars and restaurants for guests who need them, for example, people with special needs.
